FOUNDATION GUIDE / WAUKEE, IOWA

What foundation cracks can tell you

A crack in a wall or floor can be worrying, but its appearance alone does not tell you what caused it. Before choosing a foundation crack repair method, a professional will consider its direction, width, location, and any changes over time.

Look for patterns

Is the crack vertical, horizontal, or shaped like stair steps? Does water come through it? Take dated photos with a ruler beside the crack so you can compare them over time. One measurement alone cannot tell you whether movement is happening.

Repair depends on the cause

A specialist may recommend sealing the crack, injecting repair material into it, improving drainage, or adding structural reinforcement to support the wall or foundation. Sealing a crack may help with water entry, but it may not stop the movement that caused it.
